Computational Biologist

Adventurers wanted for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful honour and recognition in case of success.” Cell-Free Technology is a startup rethinking biological prototyping with an emphasis on data science. We produce in-vitro protein expression tools that allow researchers to perform quantifiable analysis of DNA circuits in as little as 60 minutes. We are seeking a passionate bio-informatician. You would join a well funded interdisciplinary team where your ideas and views will be heard. Alongside a biochemist, robotics engineer, physicist and designer you will dig into transcription-translation & protein modelling. You would have access to cutting edge prototyping tools for rapidly validating your in silico research. We are collocated with Helixworks, the Irish DNA foundry, meaning we have some of the fastest design-build-test cycles possible. We are highly focused on automation with robotic liquid handlers and fluorescent plate readers used for automating DNA circuit characterisation. We’re based in University College Cork (UCC) with close collaboration with the synthetic biology research centre. You will maintain these links through regular seminars and journal clubs. We host students from both UCC and the Cork Institute of Technology to undertake work placements. You would be in an industrial research environ- ment with a focus on products. However we are highly supportive of academic outputs. You would be encouraged to produce high impact publications, collaborate internationally and attend conferences. ESSENTIAL * Software Development: Python, Version Control (e.g. Git/GitHub), Command-Line Scripting (e.g. Bash) and Linux/Unix competence * Computer Hardware Specification for local workstations/servers and/or VPS’s Communication Tools: Google Docs, Latex, Jupyter Notebooks and NGL Viewer * Experience of Physical Computing (e.g. microcontrollers, sensors, motors etc.) * Basic Electronics Knowledge * Ability to work in Interdisciplinary Team * Ability to Supervise Students * Flexible Team Player Have a look through some of the papers that have impressed us recently to get a feel for our interests: NGL Viewer: a web application for molecular visualization Uncovering cell-free protein expression dynamics by a promoter library with diverse strengths System-level studies of a cell-free transcription-translation platform for metabolic engineering Kappa-alpha plot derived structural alphabet and BLOSUM-like substitution matrix for rapid search of protein structure database Library of synthetic transcriptional AND gates built with split T7 RNA polymerase mutants Medium Scale Integration of Molecular Logic Gates in an Automaton Molecular computation of solutions to combinatorial problems We LOVE everything the Chodera Lab does We LOVE everything the Pardee Lab does We are based in the Environmental Research Institute, University College Cork, Ireland. We are seeking a passionate microbiologist to take a senior role. You would join a well funded interdisciplinary team where your ideas and views will be heard. Alongside a biochemist, robotics engineer, bioinformatician, physicist and designer you will dig into transcription-translation and protein modelling. Your core research activities would be the production of lysate, optimisation of additives, cell-free protein expression and downstream characterisation. We are collocated with Helixworks, the Irish DNA foundry, meaning we have some of the fastest design-build-test cycles possible. We are highly focused on automation with robotic liquid handlers and fluorescent plate readers used for automating DNA circuit characterisation.
